Newlands Clinical Trials Ltd and Sovereign Medical Health Ltd, who have been involved in the sales and distribution of medical and beauty equipment around the world for the past 20 years, came together in 2001 to promote a revolutionary new treatment which was set to change the face of vein treatments forever. Laurence Newman and Adam Rubens, joint managing directors, are responsible for daily management of the businesses, supported medically by Dr Brian Newman MD FRCS and his team.

Up until approximately ten years ago, the range of vein treatments were limited. Doctors everywhere had the option of either offering surgery for the more severe and prominent vascular conditions or microsclerotherapy for the removal of veins where surgery was not justified. Lasers and similar technological advances offered some alternative in the meantime but the associated risks have been shown to far outweigh any likely benefit - in fact, with some lasers, the resulting skin damage is often worse than the appearance of the original veins it was intended to clear.

A handful of vascular experts got together at the end of the 1990's to see if an alternative can be found. Microsclerotherapy, albeit somewhat 'hit and miss' in its technique, was able to remove the darker bluer veins and the thick red veins, as a good alternative to surgery in many cases, but they wanted something capable of dealing with the very fine cosmetic veins which sclerotherapy either left behind or was unable to treat. They sought a treatment which was safer, less painful and more effective than current lasers and, on their journey, explored the utilisation and adaptation of an existing technology although never before used for this application. Adopting the tried and tested principle of thermo-coagulation, this group of Doctors devised a technique whereby they would utilise the safe heat energy emitted by a uni-polar current at the tip of an ultra-fine insulated needle, thereby being able to specifically target each individual vein for treatment whilst protecting the surrounding tissue through the insulation of the needle. The result was the instant disappearance of the fine veins without any lasting trauma to the skin and all in relative comfort. Their development was soon to be produced in the form of an electrical device we now know as Veinwave and which is now available world-wide. Veinwave is generally used in conjunction with microsclerotherapy, in respect of leg veins, to enable the practitioner to offer a comprehensive therapy. In June 2009, Veinwave received 510k clearance to market by the FDA in the USA.
